A recent study indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying these medications should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like something activating and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
